News :
I am very pleased to update you on the progress made on the establishment of the Asian Population Association.? The following tasks have been accomplished since February 2008.
1. The registration of the APA has been followed up by the Executive Secretary at the College of Population Studies of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, and the administrative arrangements for the registration of the association are now close to finishing.
2. The Nomination Committee (NC) has had fruitful discussions, resulting in the preparation of a strong list of nominations for the first election of the association which will take place during August-October 2008.? Professor Gavin Jones, Chair of the NC, is contacting the nominees for their agreement to stand for the election.
3. Second Meeting of the Establishment Committee (EC):? The next meeting of the EC will be held in Bangkok during 1-2 June 2008.? The aim of the meeting is to discuss the new developments of the APA including the registration, and to review the list of candidates prepared by the Nomination Committee for the election of the association. We will also discuss the first conference of the APA to be held in 2010. In addition to the EC members, Professor Gavin Jones, Chair of the NC, as well as Professor Peter McDonald, Vice President of the IUSSP will attend the meeting.
4. After the Establishment Committee meeting, there will be a one-day workshop on The 2010 Census Round in Asia: National Challenges and Regional Collaborations.? Terry Hull has successfully raised funds from various funding agencies including the Ford and MacArthur foundations as well as the UNFPA in New York for the meeting and the workshop.? A group of around 30 invited scholars from the region will attend the workshop.
5. Membership Drive: We have been hoping for upwards of 500 registered members by May 2008. I have just checked the membership list and I am delighted that around 120 demographers both within and outside the Asian region have applied for membership.? The list of applicants is very impressive, as many distinguished scholars are among the list of members. This is truly encouraging for our newly established association.
However, as the review of applications for membership will be undertaken by the EC and the Secretariat during 1-2 June 2008, it would ideal if those who have not joined the association, can do so as soon as possible.?? Please follow the instructions below and join the APA:
a) Visit the APA website at: http://www.apa.cps.chula.ac.th
Please also check the Membership Drive icon and introduce other professionals and colleagues who can become a member of the APA.
It should be noted that foundation members will NOT be charged any fee for the first year of membership (2008).? All members registered by 31 July 2008 will be deemed to be Foundation Members, eligible to stand and vote in the elections for the Foundation Council.
Would you please forward this message to all your colleagues, staff, graduate students and association members, and ask them to visit the website and join the association? Look forward to your active participation in all activities of the APA.
