The Establishment Committee of the Asian Population Association met in Tehran

The Establishment Committee (EC) of the Asian Population Association (APA) met in Tehran 1-4 December 2007 to bring to fruition discussions dating back to 2004 when the idea of a regional association first emerged. The Tehran Meeting produced a draft constitution and appointed the College of Population Studies (CPS) of Chulalongkorn University in Thailand as the foundation Secretariat of the Association. Since the Tehran Meeting, the Association has made a good start with the following accomplishments;

  • The Nomination Committee has been established
  • The Secretariat Office has been set up in Bangkok and the association has been registered to gain a legal status
  • A website and APA logo have been designed and was launched on February 16th, 2008
  • Announcement of the establishment of the APA has been sent out to more than 2,000 demographers around the world, and the applications for membership are flowing in. We are targeting at least 500 members by July 2008, leading to the election of officers in October 2008.
  • Key Activities of the APA will include
  • Organization of Regional Conferences to promote the exchange of research findings and the debate of policy proposals among the nations of Asia
  • Promotion of collaborative research among professionals working on the population issues of Asia
  • Facilitation of the exchange of Scientific information among a network of independent population professionals using both web based electronic links and established forms of mass communications in the nations of the region
  • Provision of intellectual support for policy discussions related to population issues in nations and the region as a whole
  • Establishment and elaboration of training courses to raise the technical and methodological skills of population professionals in the region
