"Demographic Analysis with Application to Aging Society"

Topic

In this comprehensive workshop, participants get the knowledge on how to use basic and advanced spreadsheet techniques (Excel) to present and analyze demographic data. Each topic is aimed to show how to apply different advanced Excel technique to solve typical tasks of demographic analysis. The following major topics are to be covered:


· Population age compositions and its measures, period-cohort transformations, introduction to Excel advanced function

· Advanced technique of data presentation, interactive graphical systems

· Life tables and mortality analysis

· Multiple-decrement life tables and their applications

· Fertility measures

· Stable populations

· Working with large data sets

· Introduction to Visual Basic for Application (VBA)

· New measures of age and aging

· Model age patterns of vital rates, mortality, fertility, and migration

· Data graduation and smoothing technique

· Population projections, parameterized population projections

· Introduction to R language for demographers

Resource person

Professor Sergei Scherbov is the Deputy Program Director of IIASA's World Population Program (POP), Director of Demographic Analysis at the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital (IIASA, VID/ÖAW, WU), and Leader of the Population Dynamics and Forecasting Research Group at the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID), Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is one of the world's leading experts in Computer Application of Demography. He is also a winner of a prestigious Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) to study new measures of aging.

Prospective applicants
The training workshop is intended for junior scientists, researchers and graduate students whose field of interest is related to mathematical demography and population studies. It also suits to early-to mid-career professionals working in statistical or research institutes or teaching demographic analysis at universities who wish to strengthen their basic analytical skills and gain knowledge of advanced techniques for demographic analysis. Interested applicants are asked to fill in an application form and return it, along with the CV and a short letter of motivation, by August 1, 2015. Please note that we are able to offer a very limited number of places.
